First Trip of the Year

Contributed by Rob Rushton (24. 04.2011)

My wife decided we needed a week away so booked us into a caravan site in Cresswell in the North East. Little did she know!!

After doing some hunting on the internet I discovered to my glee that Alnwick was no more than 30mins away and this as all mostly know is the home of Hardy.

I suggested a shopping trip on the 2nd day of our hols and hatched a plan to visit this holy shrine. Unfortunately (or predictably) I spent a small fortune and came away with a brand new matching 5 weight rod and reel. Now for those that don't know me I have been a member for over 10 years and learnt the river off my late father Bill Rushton and was taught to fish it by way of the upstream worm with a fly rod.

I had decided last year that I would put some serious effort into catching these trout with a fly (even to the extent of having casting lessons).

I arrived this morning at 8.30am with Chris my friend and proudly set up the new outfit. We fished at Musgrave upstream and I never saw a fish all morning but what the hell! My casting has improved (I think!). Chris had a belter of about 3lb which was swiftly returned and never had another touch. All in all I couldn't think of a better place on earth to spend a few hours in peace on such a beautiful morning than on the Eden.
