I enjoyed fishing the river very much and look forward to returning. I was there three days and managed to locate a pocket of fish on day three (just up from the Blands Wath Bridge): nothing very big, but ten nice fat little brownies of the 8-10 oz. class. Fish seemed less in evidence upstream of Kirkby Stephen - is that unusual, or is the fishing generally better downstream of the town?
I wish I'd known that the water above KS wasn't much fished! There were certainly *some* fish rising in some of the deeper pools (early one morning at Stenkrith Park I found quite a few rising fish in fact), but it did seem rather shallow overall. I caught all ten fish on a very pale (almost white) size 14 elkhair caddis.
