Opening Day

Trout from River EdenThe opening day of the season was to say the least a 'wild' day. Strong winds and choppy water would have made it difficult for the unexperianced angler but knowledge of the river was key on a day like today.

As I worked my way upstream from Musgrave bridge, the water level was perfect with a bit of colour. Although snow melt made the water very very chilly (gents, you know what I mean) the challenge of catching a fish was warming. Standing below Brough beck casting upstream into the slack water didn't reward me with any signs. After a few more varied casts, the fly line straightened up and a lovely 1lb or so was on the end of the line (see picutre).

After meeting up later with Paul Procter and John Garner I made my way back to the car stopping by the church for a couple of casts. Here I missed 2 takes on the left bank fishing upstream.

In all, a good start to the season.

Have a green and a yellow/mustard Czech nymph in your box.
