Fish of a Lifetime

Contributed by Callum Highet (08.07.09)

I had made the effort of fishing the Eden today, 8th of July, whilst the river was running above average height. I fancied my chances as the water was slightly coloured and there was a good hatch on. There were plenty of brown and olive duns and also black gnats clouding up the air.

I was fishing downstream just above where Brough beck enters the Eden fishing the foam lines and margins. I was rewarded with several smaller fish each about 12-14 inches in length. I carried on fishing for a further 10 minutes when I suddenly spotted a fish roll in the surface film about 8 feet from where I was standing!

I cast a good 8 feet above the fish and allowed the fly to pass over the rising fish and it didnt take it so I cast again. As I allowed the fly to pass over the fish again it gently rolled and took the fly and bang!

It shot downstream taking a good 50 yards out of my backing. I followed the fish down stream until it tired a little. At this point I realised I was not fighting against a 3 or 4 pounder but something much bigger. I landed the fish after 3/4 of an hour of hard fighting to find to my amazement it weighed 5lbs 2oz. a fish of a life time. The fish was taken to my regret now, such a beautiful fish but also lovely on a plate. Hope you all catch a monster soon too.

All the best and tight lines.
